March 22, 2022Mitsubishi Power’s installation of a hybrid system, located in Malkowo near Gdańsk, enters a critical phase. MEGAMIE is the Japanese giant’s first such project in Europe. Rockfin, which specializes in designing, manufacturing, testing and servicing oil, gas and water systems in the energy, industrial as well as oil and gas sectors, is in charge of its implementation.
The implementation of MEGAMIE, an integrated hybrid power generation system that is based on combined solid oxide fuel cell and micro gas turbine technology, began in the first quarter of this year. The Mitsubishi Power team decided to entrust this to Rockfin, which is responsible for the redesign to EU standards, complete assembly of the unit, production of auxiliary systems and functional testing, which will begin in early autumn. Ultimately, the system will be sent to one of Germany’s academic institutions.
– We are currently in the process of concluding final agreements on the technical details and prefabrication of the systems with the Mitsubishi Power team in Japan (Nagasaki). Given MEGAMIE’s target location of Germany, we need to pay particular attention to ensuring that the systems that have so far been assembled in Asia meet the requirements of the European market. The know-how and experience of our team is crucial in this case, which is why Rockfin has been entrusted with the entire project – explains Tomasz Rynkowski, Sales Director. Power Sector.
The main steel structures and pipelines that will be adapted to withstand high temperatures, have already entered the production phase, which is being carried out at the Rockfin plant in Bydgoszcz. Delivery of components to Malkowo was scheduled for early August, with assembly to start in the middle of the month. Other components such as valves and measurement equipment are in the final stages of technical agreement between the Mitsubishi and Rockfin teams.
– Everything indicates that in October, and according to the project’s schedule, we should be ready to test the system. Its operational launch is scheduled for March 2022 – says Paweł Hołowacz, Business Unit Manager.
MEGAMIE is part of the green revolution
The technology behind MEGAMIE, which can supply the electricity needs of a single office building or 30 homes, is the result of research by Mitsubishi Power and the Japanese government agency, NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization). At the core of MEGAMIE are fuel cells which, unlike conventional systems, can utilize low-emission hydrogen which is already being called the fuel for an energy source of the future.
– Compared to the conventional generating of electricity, which is based on burning gas, Mitsubishi Power’s system emits only half the amount of carbon dioxide. It is one of the most innovative technologies in the global energy market and an important part of the green revolution that the entire industry is currently undergoing. MEGAMIE is also a strategic project for Rockfin. It significantly expands our portfolio of cutting-edge solutions that support the energy transformation of our customers – summarizes Michał Wróblewski, Chief Commercial Officer, Vice President of the Board.
